There are numerous dog breeds from all over the world but in the United States, pugs are probably one of the top choices of dog breeds for the past several decades. These dogs are in fact one of the determined dog breeds by means of DNA evidence. There are also proofs that pugs could have been existed since 400BC. Originally, pugs were bred during the Yang and Tang Dynasties by the Chinese Royalty at the Forbidden City.
In the US, this dog breed started drawing attention after the Civil War and in 1885; it was officially recognized by American Kennel Club. From then on, the popularity of this dog breed continuously grows. As a matter of fact, the pug has maintained its position in the top 20 list of dog breeds recognized by AKC.
However, although it is a very popular dog, the pug tends to get vulnerable to some health issues such as respiratory problems which are mainly caused by unique shape of their heads. Some respiratory problems that pugs could experience are elongated soft palate and pneumonia. Their large eyes also lead to numbers of health problems like corneal ulcers. These dogs are also susceptible to cataracts that can reduce their visibility and even lead to loss of sight.
