Origin

Before, there were different theories with regards to where the dog breed Pug really originated. Some believe, the breed came from the Far East while others said, it developed in Europe. However, after long years of debate, it is now accepted that the pug origin started in China then reached Japan and later spread in Europe.

It was said that the pugs were bred to sit on the Chinese emperor’s lap because the dog resembled the dragons. The short haired pug was originally named lo chiang-sze then later shortened to lo-sze. During the Yuan Dynasty, it was part of the custom to parade all the animals of the emperor. Following the lions are the so-called "golden-coated nimble dogs”, which were believed to be the pug breeds. They were later bred in Tibet by monks, after which it reached Japan and Europe and after the Civil War, it also reached the United States.

The Pug Kennel Club was established during the 19th century in the United States, and in 1885, it was recognized by American Kennel Club. All over the world, the pug was given different names. In Holland and Germany, for example, the pug is called Mops, Carline in France, and Mopsi in Finland.
